The transition from Heirloom to LED lighting has been associated with overlighting in outdoor applications.  Too much light can actually reduce visibility in the outdoor environment, wastes energy, and contributes to the growing problem of light pollution and sky glow.  This document explains why it is important to use fewer lumens, typically fifty to sixty percent less, when using LED lighting.
